Antalya Museum of Archeology

Address: Konyaalti Cad., west of town, Antalya, Turkey
Phone: 242/241-4528

OPEN: Tues.-Sun. 9-6

This is one of the most important museums
in Turkey. It is made up of two buildings, Caravansary and Bedesten which were built around 1464 - 1471. Its valuable collection encompasses the story of all the various civilizations established in Asia Minor.

This museum houses artifacts from the
Hittites, Urartians, Assyrian Colonies, Phrygians, Greeks and Romans. The exhibits are displayed chronologically beginning with a collection of stone utensils for daily use dating from the Paleolithic period and semi-precious jewels from the 6th millennium.

The first-rate collection at the Antalya Museum encompasses Turkish crafts and costumes and artifacts from the classical and Roman eras (including the notable statues of the gods, from Aphrodite to Zeus, in the Gods Gallery), with bits of Byzantine iconography and some prehistoric fossils thrown in. Don't miss the remains of prehistoric man and the Seljuks, the children's and ethnographic sections, and the fabulous open-air sculpture gallery. There is also a cafeteria and a gift shop. If you have the time, walk to the museum from the center of town along the coastline promenade. .
